A day in the life of: Interns @ VIOOH

Written By: Olivia Slade

Welcome back to our ‘A day in the life of…’ series where we talk to our employees across the globe, to discuss their career paths to date, their roles at VIOOH and top interview tips.

This month we caught up with our Interns at VIOOH who joined us this year in our UK office on various length internships, and shared some of their latest learnings, offering fresh perspectives to our teams. This article offers a unique glimpse into their challenges, achievements and everyday adventures.

Olivia Slade - MarketingOlivia Slade (1)

I joined VIOOH at the beginning of the year in the Marketing Department. Having completed two marketing based degrees, marketing has always been an interest of mine and I wanted to pursue a career in it. I wanted a company that would celebrate and support me and this is something that attracted me to VIOOH. The culture is amazing - everyone at VIOOH has a genuine care for one another. This integrity underpins the success of the company a, which became apparent to me in the hiring and onboarding process, and has remained consistent throughout my time here.

Whilst the shift from university life to an internship has been tough at times, it has been great to have autonomy in my own role, taking responsibility from the get-go and leading various projects across all the functions within the marketing department. I have had exposure in field marketing, social media marketing, PR and communications, product marketing and marketing research, which has been amazing. I have loved being able to work on projects from start to finish, as it has been super rewarding to see the outcome and results, and also see my work be recognised within the company. Being able to put my educational experience and knowledge into practice, whilst being able to take risks, and learn from these experiences, taking the initiative and suggesting ideas (even if they don’t ultimately go ahead) has been a real learning point for me.

The people at VIOOH are a big highlight. Not only has my team been super supportive and encouraging, providing me with their expert knowledge and mentorship, but socialising with people after work, at industry and internal events, getting to know people beyond my team and in different aspects of the company, has really cemented the family feel at VIOOH, which I’ve truly felt part of in such a short space of time.

My advice for future interns would be to come willing to learn and get stuck into all projects, as the more you put in, the more you get back.

NathanNathan Fox - Product Training

I joined VIOOH as a Product Training Team Intern for the year. The attraction to VIOOH came from the fact that they seemed genuinely interested in aiding my development in the industry, alongside the importance and need for my role within the company. I knew I would feel a sense of responsibility and achievement when it came to completing tasks. At each stage of the interview process, and while speaking to different people within the company, I saw myself working well at VIOOH which increased  my excitement at the prospect of working here.

Arriving at the office for the first time, meeting everyone face-to-face and beginning the onboarding process could have been an overwhelming experience. However, I wasn’t alone as I started with other new employees, new interns and managers alike. This, along with staggering the onboarding sessions meant I could consume information and feel comfortable extremely quickly.

On a professional level, I have learned how to use lots of different softwares, such as Camtasia (video creation and screen recording) as well as the VIOOH platforms of VIOOH Trading Manager and VIOOH Automation. I welcomed my new found responsibility as an intern at VIOOH where the time-management and quality has to meet a high level of professionalism. Clients need to be able to digest and learn from what I produce and I want to be an important part of my team.

Some of my big learnings have been trying new things, specifically for my role, whether that's a new animation effect or transition. Even if the idea is rejected, taking the initiative and looking to improve the videos not only makes my role more engaging, it makes the videos more interesting for the viewers. I was very proud to officially upload and share my first video tutorial, the reaction was very positive which gave me the encouragement to keep working and improving my skills.

For anyone looking to do an internship at VIOOH, the biggest piece of advice I would give would be just be eager to learn.

Victor Guillerm - Data SciencePhoto profil

I joined VIOOH on a three month internship as a Data Science Intern within the Data Product Team. I typically worked on data science topics like Demand Forecasting, Allocation Engine, Pricing and internal projects. As a double degree master student (studying in a French Grande Ecole in statistics and data science in Paris, and in a French Business School in London), I was looking for an internship in a marketing or media tech company in London, and more specifically in a data science department, blending my interests for tech, data science, and machine learning, applied to business and marketing.

While doing some research for companies that matched these criteria, I also looked for alumni that worked in such companies, so contacted Remy Prom, who works at VIOOH as the Data Innovation Lead, and had previously attended the same Ecole. Following the short recruitment process, I had one interview with Carrie Ward, the Optimisation Research Lead and Remy. I immediately felt at ease during the interview and the proposed role appeared really interesting and good fun.

Within a month I had the opportunity to work with several tools that are part of a data science project (python, github, AWS, jira, snowflake, etc.). More specifically, having first-hand experience with AWS tools is a very good point for future jobs. I have also had the opportunity to work in a team with several people with different backgrounds (data science, data analytics, product, engineering).

The company working atmosphere is really good and makes you want to work! I have enjoyed Thursdays after work at the pub, as it is a very good way to know more about the people you are working with outside of the office. VIOOH also gave us the chance to attend the London AI Summit with the data science team. It was a good opportunity to listen to experts about genAI and data strategy.

I think the most important thing as a data science intern is to be motivated to learn. You won’t know everything! Showing the cool stuff you delivered in your past internships or projects is also important within the recruitment process, so the team can see if you will be interested in the different projects during the internship.

Brune Charachon - People Brune

I’m Brune and I’m the People Intern for the summer. I chose VIOOH for my internship because of its reputation for being at the forefront of digital out-of-home advertising. The field of digital out-of-home advertising excites me because it combines technology, creativity, and data to create impactful advertising solutions. I am eager to be part of a sector that not only challenges me intellectually but also allows me to be creative and make a tangible impact.

The interviews were friendly and more conversational than formal. Overall, it was a very positive and stress-free experience. They were clear about the expectations for the role and provided detailed information about the internship programme.

Working in the People team at VIOOH has been a fantastic experience. The collaborative environment in the office fostered a strong sense of camaraderie and support among team members. I learned a lot from my colleagues, who were always willing to share their knowledge and assist when needed. The office environment was dynamic and conducive to productivity, with ample opportunities for face-to-face interactions and brainstorming sessions that enhanced our teamwork. Working on different projects, I’ve used specific software relevant to my field, alongside enhancing my skills in data analysis, managing tasks effectively, meeting deadlines and improving my ability to articulate ideas clearly and concisely.

Working independently on certain tasks has fostered a sense of self-motivation and driven my own progres without needing constant supervision. Engaging with a diverse team has improved my communication and collaboration skills. I’ve used my Friday ‘Growth Time’ to connect with colleagues and industry professionals, both within and outside of VIOOH, as networking has been invaluable for gaining insights and advice.

For future interns I would say showcase your curiosity! Be genuinely interested in learning about VIOOH’s industry and technology, and asking insightful questions shows you’re eager to understand and contribute.

Jean-Luc Tchimbakala - Data Science Jean Luc

I’m Jean-Luc and I have been a Data Science Intern for a few months. A previous intern at VIOOH from my school gave me a great review of the company, its objectives and missions which were appealing to me. Moreover, as a student from France, I wanted an experience abroad where I could apply my data science skills.

The recruitment and onboarding process were both good, and the sessions provided context of the company work across all departments, underlining the true values of VIOOH and how each team works together to reach company goals.

Adjusting to this new role has been quite easy. There are many French speakers within the company which has helped me feel more at ease, and the Data Science team have been very welcoming, making me feel comfortable from the outset. The hybrid working model and the work life balance at VIOOH are great, I can come into the office and collaborate with my colleagues in person or online.

I have loved being able to apply new data science skills to different projects, such as data series, which is something I was unfamiliar with coming into this internship.

If you are interested in becoming an intern at VIOOH, please keep an eye out for future roles on our careers page.
